Mexico World Cup: World Championships, Olympic Championships,
and the new combined event format
The 2009 Modern Pentathlon World Cup season will officially get under way
in Mexico City, Mexico on Thursday 26 March and it could not be a more exciting
start to the season. Competing in the Mexico event will be double Olympic
Champion (2004 / 2008) Andrey Moiseev (RUS), while on the women's side, one of
the favourites will be double World Champion (2007 / 2008) Amelie Cazé (FRA).
What will make this event even more exciting will be the fact that the new
combined event format will be held for the first time at the World Cup level.
Adopted by the UIPM Congress in November 2008, the combined event adds an even
more enthralling finish to this great sport. The combined event is the
continuous combination of the shoot and run disciplines, where athletes commence
with 5 shots (in time limit of 70 seconds) followed by 1km run. This is repeated
two further times for a total of 15 shots and 3km run. For more information on
the combined event see www.pentathlon.org
The Mexico World Cup is the first in a series of 5 events in the following two
months which will culminate in the World Cup final to be held in Rio de Janeiro
12-13 September.
