Report on the Winter Meet, Victoria, Jan 26, 2008

The day threatened to deliver snow but true to our BC good fortune, it held off. The Cadet Hall hosted its 26th annual January Winter Meet. This must be some kind of a record for venues. 23 entrees arrived, down from our 28 anticipated. Some of those alumni members obviously woke up and realized they were ‘legends in their own minds’ and decided against sustaining permanent injury.

Alberta athletes were front and centre as we opened up to set up. They didn’t get the message that we were delaying the start from 7 am to 8 am . Such good sports they were about it all.

Throughout the entire event, there was a large crowd of old timers both parents and volunteers who have taken part in the Victoria Modern Pentathlon meets over the years. We were able to present President Volunteer Plaques to Phil McOrmond and Bruce Ihara . Both men have been instrumental at some time in coaching and administering on various executives to our athletes.

Some memorable moments were shooting scores obtained by Erin Beckett of Maple Ridge with a 172, Melanie McCann with a 177 and Josh taking the prize with a 184. Allan Foster of BC and Cairo fame warmed up and finished with four 10’s on his final target.

The run was held on a track with a mass start. Jordon Maynard led the way and by 200 meters had left everyone behind. He came in clocking a 9:17 . 2000 meter runs by the Alumni saw some amazing results and obviously these folks continue to run. Allan Foster, Hana duTemple and Tanya Shaw (nee Grad) all came in sub 8:30 .

Fencing which is always noisy and exciting. Jordan again, showing he is gaining interest in Pentathlon scored more Victories than defeats. Enej Bagjoric of the Alumni group and Tik showed them how it is done, however with 27 victories and 3 defeats each but Tik was the winner having scored two hits on Enej.

We were able to run a Novice Piste which had a mix of ages and gender much like the ‘experienced’ piste. However, size has a distinct advantage in this group as witnessed by Jason Cheng’s overwhelming success of 20 V and 5 D. Jason came to try the sport out and who knows?

Moving over to Panorama Pool and we were ready for the fourth and final event. The Landseidel team of Spencer and Courtenay made it look easy as usual. We keep hoping they will change their minds and pursue Pentathlon with the same success they have in swimming. Natasha Lineham has not lost her swimming talent, doing the 100 meters in 1:10 . The Maple Ridge trio of the MacDonald girls, Megan and Kelsey and Erin Beckett had very good swim times.
